Description
This is responsible police work in the City of Gretna’s Police Department to include the protection of life and property through crime prevention, and law and ordinance enforcement. Work is performed under the direction of an assigned Police Sergeant and/or Police Captain. Daily work patrolling the city, investigating criminal activity, responding to citizen calls and other various specialized assignments. Work requires the use and exercise of independent judgment so that the Police Department is operated with efficiency and effectiveness. Work is demonstrated, supervised and reviewed by superior officers and/or Field Training Officers (FTOs) through conferences, written reports, personal inspections and observation of the results obtained.
Duties and Responsibilities:
A Reserve Officer is responsible for the protection of life and property, enforcement of law and ordinances, and related duties.
On an assigned shift, operates a patrol vehicle or walks to observe for violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order;
Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints;
Enforces traffic laws; issues citations for traffic violations;
Obtains and serves warrants and makes arrests, maintains warrant records, testifies in court; assists in preparation of trial cases;
Interviews victims and witnesses; performs property and evidence duties; interviews suspects, witnesses, complainants and victims; interrogates suspects, gathers evince, apprehends violators, takes photographs, fingerprints, performs related crime scene tasks;
Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Requirements:
Be at least 19 years of age at time of application.
Be a U.S. citizen.
High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
No convictions, felony, or misdemeanor involving perjury or false statements.
No convictions involving domestic violence.
Must be free of convictions and violations pertaining to Florida Department of Law Enforcement guidelines.
Be of good moral character.
No dishonorable discharge from any branch of the Armed Forces of the United States.
Pass a background investigation.
Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of pertinent Federal and State laws and municipal ordinances; thorough knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; general knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department; ability to analyze evidence; ability to question and interview skillfully; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to organize and prepare concise comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously, firmly and tactfully with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; possession of physical agility and endurance; skill in the use of firearms and the operation of a motor vehicle; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other law enforcement officials, and the general public.
